Meet Hemlata Momaya, Executive Director, and Mausami Momaya, Director of Social Services, of Bal Jagat – Children’s World Inc.:
How long has your business been located in the Zaferia area of Long Beach?
Since 2006. Prior to 2006 we were in the city of Chatsworth in Los Angeles County.
What need does your business meet to residents of Long Beach?
We help singles and married couples to adopt orphan children from foreign countries that are residing in orphanages. There is no religious requirement – we accept all religious backgrounds. Our approach is very personable, and we always look after the best interests of the child. We establish close relationships with all of the families that we work with.
Why do your clients/customers select you over your competitors?
Families do their research. They go online to see our website, social media pages and posts, and read our reviews. Some are referred by friends. As a family run agency, we have a 34+ year history and an excellent reputation. We conduct an individual orientation meeting with each family to clarify the process, and answer all of their questions. We explain what Hague Accreditation means, and let families know that the U.S. State Department oversees our organization, requiring that our process is completely transparent.
What is your background and how did you get started with your business?
We are both MSW Social Workers. Hemlata received her Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Bombay and earned a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in Mumbai, India. Mausami earned both her Bachelors and Masters Degree (BASW and MSW) in Social Work at California State University, Long Beach and is also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). As a young adult, Hemlata volunteered and worked in orphanages in her native country of India. She always had a warm feeling for the orphan children and wanted them to have a better life. When she came to the USA, she started this agency by herself, specializing in India. As time went on, she branched out to South/Central America, Romania/ Eastern Europe and Russia, then China. More recently, we have worked in Africa and other Asian countries. Mausami visited orphanages with her mother as a child and saw first hand how children live. She has interned and worked in domestic adoption with LA County Dept of Children & Family Services. She has experience with both domestic and international adoption.
Hemlata founded Bal Jagat – Children’s World Inc. 34+ years ago and started with one family at a time. PBS named her as the 2008 Local Hero of the Year and she was awarded the Angel in Adoption in 2016 by the U.S. Congress. In 2015 Mausami she was awarded a Woman of Distinction by Assemblyman Patrick O’Donnell, acknowledged by the US House of Representatives and has Congressional Recognition. In 2016, she was presented with the Community Service Alumni award by her alma mater, CSULB.
